Indicator Titrimetric Method
Place 0.5 g burnt or hydrated lime (1 g ground limestone or ground marl), prepared as in 924.03 (see 1.1.03), in 250 mL Erlenmeyer; add 50.00 mL HCl standard solution and boil gently 5 min. Cool and titrate excess acid with NaOH standard solution using phenolphthalein. For burnt and hydrated lime, report as percent CaO; for limestone and marl, report as percent CaCO3 equivalence.

Potentiometric Titration Method
(Applicable to liming materials containing large amount of Fe2+ or coloring matter, but not to silicate materials.)
Proceed as in B through “Cool . . .”. Transfer to 250 mL beaker and insert pH/reference electrodes of pH meter, buret containing 0.25 M NaOH, and mechanical stirrer. Stir at moderate speed to avoid splash. Deliver NaOH rapidly to pH 5, then dropwise until solution attains pH 7 and remains constant 1 min while stirring. (If end point is passed, add, from 1 mL Mohr pipet, just enough 0.5 M HCl to bring pH to <7, and back-titrate slowly to pH 7.) Add mL of excess acid, if used, to initial 50 mL in calculating. Report as percent CaCO3 or CaO equivalence as in B.
