Analysing 219 chromosome level genome assemblies for Lepidoptera, Mulhair et al. (https://doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msad241) reveal dynamic rates of opsin duplication and evolution across the order. The colors in the artwork, inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian, broadly represent the rates of duplication of the different visual opsin genes in the species which they occurred.
