Abstract
This chapter discusses expertise as an organizational practice, and applies this perspective by considering organizations that compete to provide expert communication services. Using grounded practical theory as a guide the chapter discusses how organizations present the communication expertise they offer, and the ways they design communication services as solutions for the problems other organizations face. An analysis of different organizational types is presented that captures the language and logic used by these organizations to communicate about the respective expertise provided. The type of expertise presented in this chapter is relational and is manifest in a network of organizational activities and structures that span across local and global contexts. The focus is on viewing organizational expertise as practical knowledge and reasoning about both how to design communication services, and how to navigate the market for communication expertise.
