ORCID
What is ORCID®?
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a global non-profit, and community-led organization that enables transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and their affiliations by providing a unique, persistent identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities.
An integral part of the wider digital infrastructure needed for researchers to share information on a global scale, ORCIDs simplify research workflows, resolve name ambiguity, and ensure correct attribution of research outputs and activities. Systems throughout the research, funding, and publishing cycle now support ORCID, leading to streamlined and efficient manuscript submission, grant application, preparing funding reports, bibliography maintenance, and research evaluation processes (e.g. authors can avoid re-entering their details when they use their ORCID profile to identify themselves in submission systems). In addition to linking research activities and outputs to individuals, ORCID profiles associate alternative names, biographies, and other information on their profile page.
Any author or researcher can create an ORCID for free. A rapidly growing number of academic institutions are integrating their network sign-in systems with ORCID. If you are a member of an institution, you should contact your local IT staff to inquire how you can connect your ORCID with your institutional username.
OUP’s support for ORCID
OUP is a strong supporter of ORCID and contributed to ORCID’s initial funding. Our publishing systems support ORCID as outlined below.
Submission systems
Submission systems used by OUP (ScholarOne Manuscripts®, Editorial Manager®, etc.) are integrated with ORCID both at log-in and through author-provided information. ORCID is an optional field that the submitting author can fill in. Existing authors can also add an ORCID to their account. The submission system connects with the ORCID database to allow the author to sign in, thereby confirming their identity and validating the ORCID. This approach ensures that every ORCID collected by our submission systems is validated by the author.
Display of ORCIDs
As ORCID identifiers are collected, they are included in the data for articles, chapters and books, and displayed online, both in the HTML and PDF versions of the publication, in compliance with recommended practice issued by ORCID.
ORCID-enabled functionality
ORCID functionality online allows users to link to the ORCID website to view an author’s profile and list of publications. ORCIDs are displayed on web pages and are sent downstream to third parties in data feeds, where supported.
OUP encourages authors to provide their ORCIDs at submission and take advantage of the benefits of participating in the ORCID programme. Several OUP journals additionally mandate the provision of ORCIDs at submission to support this initiative more strongly, and to ensure authors can be clearly and easily identified.
ORCID and ScholarOne manuscripts
If you have registered with ORCID, you can associate your ORCID with your ScholarOne account by going to your account details, entering your ORCID and validating your details. When you click ‘Validate’ you will be taken to the ORCID site to sign in (you will need your ORCID username and password). Click the link to agree to attach your ORCID details to your ScholarOne account. Note: this will overwrite existing name and email details. If you do not wish to do that then when you are asked ‘Would you like to update your account now?’ click ‘Cancel’.
Note that you can update your ORCID record any time, but the updates will not be automatically reflected in your ScholarOne account; you need to revalidate the ID in your ScholarOne account. If you see a red X next to your ORCID, it is unvalidated (this might happen, for instance, if your institution has registered for you). Unvalidated ORCIDs will not be published. To validate, click on the link to ‘update ORCID iD’, log in, and follow the instructions to authorize the link between the ScholarOne site and your ORCID. If you see a green tick mark, then the ORCID has already been validated.
ORCID and Editorial Manager
If you have registered with ORCID, you can associate your ORCID with your Editorial Manager account by going to your account details, entering your ORCID and validating your details. When you click ‘validate’ you will be taken to the ORCID site to sign in (you will need your ORCID username and password). Click the link to agree to attach your ORCID details to your Editorial Manager account.
If you see a red X next to your ORCID, it is unvalidated (this might happen for instance if your institute has registered for you). Unvalidated ORCIDs will not be published. To validate it, click on the link to ‘update ORCID iD’, log in, and follow the instructions to authorize the link between the Editorial Manager site and your ORCID. If you see a green tick mark, then the ORCID has already been validated.
ORCID for books submitted off system
Where there is no submission system and you are submitting your content to a member of the OUP Editorial team by email (e.g. for academic books) you will also be sent an Author Questionnaire for completion and submission alongside your manuscript. Please include your ORCID on that questionnaire so that our team can ensure it is displayed online with your work.
