Abstract
This chapter briefly describes the history of the competency movement in professional psychology and the development of competency benchmarks across various levels of professional development. With regard to applied psychology, we define the specialty of cognitive and behavioral psychology, and the application of the core competency areas. The areas of competency included in this chapter are relevant for psychologists who define themselves as specialists in the area of cognitive and behavioral psychology and who provide independent psychological services. Moreover, these competencies have been defined and elaborated through professional consensus to the specialty of cognitive and behavioral psychology as one of 15 psychology specialty areas recognized by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Examples of both foundational and functional competencies required for best practices in the specialty of cognitive and behavioral psychology are provided and discussed.
