On the cover: Even after 36 hours of i.v. antibiotics multiple intracellular and extracellular coccoid bacteria in chains (dark blue, Brown Brenn staining) were detected in the debrided tissue of a patient suffering from GAS necrotizing fasciitis. Necrotic soft tissue with dissociated collagen fibers and scarce elastic fibers (light red) and erythrocytes (green) are observed in a background of neutrophilic and mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate (see Andreoni et al, pp 269-77).
