A focus on education in communication is the key to changing culture and practice from a strictly biomedical model to ‘whole personal care’. Without formalized training, we are left to use old habits that are often based on antiquated assumptions and beliefs. Through formalized training, new objectives and opportunities emerge to empower patients and caregivers to improve healthcare experiences. This section provides an overview of the principles of communication skills training, and outlines the training requirements of all the key players in communication training and the teaching thereof. Guidelines for learner-centred communication, and training for health professionals and patients, are described in detail. We also provide suggestions for training facilitators and simulated patients who play an essential role in shaping healthcare professionals’ behaviour to be more effective and compassionate as they practice their craft.

Oxford Academic is home to a wide variety of products. The institutional subscription may not cover the content that you are trying to access. If you believe you should have access to that content, please contact your librarian.
