Occupational health psychology is very topical and a rapidly developing field and I read this book with great interest. This first edition is written by two eminent academics in the discipline from the University of Nottingham and has contributions from a number of internationally recognized experts. Occupational health psychology is defined by the authors simply as ‘the contribution of applied psychology to occupational health’ and is aimed at ‘promoting the understanding, control and prevention of work-related illness and injury and the promotion of health and well-being’.

The book comprises 11 chapters, each covering a core aspect of the discipline (as delineated by the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology). Of prime interest to the occupational health professional are the chapters on work-related stress, work organization and health, interventions to promote well-being at work, psychosocial risk management at the workplace level, workplace health promotion, the physical workspace and corporate culture, health and well-being. Each chapter provides the theoretical framework, practical aspects, case studies and areas for future study and research. The primary focus is on the service work environment, although specific issues relevant to various other workplaces and groups of workers are also examined.
