Objective
...
Peyronies disease (PD), characterised by penile curvature, affects approximately 4% of the adult male population with a peak incidence in the 5th and 6th decades of life. Public awareness of PD has increased over recent years; yet the medical associations, pathogenesis and aetiology of the disease are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine the presence, or absence, of associated medical conditions in men undergoing surgical correction for PD.
Methods
A retrospective note review was undertaken for all patients undergoing corrective surgery for PD within the previous 2 years. The case notes of 34 patient’s (mean age 54) were reviewed, analysed and compared with the Health Survey for England statistics with respect to potential associations and risk factors for PD.
Results
We found an increased prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, (38.7%) and diabetes, (17.2%) in our cohort compared to the literature. A smaller proportion of overweight and obese individuals, (72% compared to 80% nationally) and a greater level of normal BMI individuals (28% compared to 20%) were found in our study. There was also a smaller predilection to hypertension with 25.8% being hypertensive compared to 29.1% nationally. Not surprisingly, a significant number of patients undergoing surgery for PD also suffered from erectile dysfunction, (56%) compared to only 16% (range of 3-50%) nationally for a similar age group. Graph 1 depicts the presence of risk factors and the median BMI for our patients and Graph 2 indicates the quality of erection in patients with differing risk factors.
