Endocrine Discovery
In a study of Scottish children aged 4 to 10 years of age who underwent genotyping for the rs9939609 allele of the fat mass and obesity–associated (FTO) gene, the variant appeared to be associated with increased food intake and food choice, suggesting a possible hyperphagic phenotype or an inherited preference for energy-dense foods. (N Engl J Med [December 11, 2008] 359 (24):2558)
Examination of the effects of a melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) agonist, LY2112688, in 28 overweight or obese individuals with a loss-of-function mutation in MC4R found that melanocortinergic signaling significantly influences blood pressure in humans in an insulin-independent manner. (N Engl J Med [January 1, 2009] 360:44)
In a study of 46 type 2 diabetic patients with white coat hypertension (WCH) and 117 normotensive diabetic patients, WCH was associated with an increased risk for maroalbuminuria, and both nonproliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, after adjustments for confounding factors. (Diabetes Care [December 2008] 31 (12):2233)
