Abstract
Allopregnanediol (5α-pregnane-3α,20α-diol) has been isolated from pools of meconium excreted by male and female infants during the first 24 hr after birth. It was identified by melting point, infrared and sulfuric acid spectra, gas chromatographic analysis and mass spectrometry. This steroid has not previously been isolated in crystalline form from human fetal and newborn excreta. All the allopregnanediol was obtained from the sulfate fraction. This finding re-emphasizes the importance of the role of the sulfate conjugating system in fetal and newborn physiology.
