Four patients with the Stein-Leventhal syndrome showed poor depression of 11-deoxy-17-ketosteroids on adrenal suppression and marked elevation of these steroids on ovarian stimulation with human pituitary FSH, as compared to a normal woman, 2 patients with secondary amenorrhea without hirsutism, 2 hirsute women and 2 other patients with the Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Increased pregnanetriol and Δ5-pregnenetriol excretion was also observed in a few patients, but only following ovarian stimulation. The studies emphasize some of the variants of the Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Sequential administration of human pituitary FSH and HCG has proved to be quite successful in the induction of ovulation.
