A survey was made of 205 normal volunteers in Jamaica in whom thyroid radioiodine uptake, urinary stable iodine and radioiodine were measured. It was found that, at 24 hr after a tracer dose of iodine-131, the mean neck uptake was only 13.8% of the administered dose. This is compared with results of about twice this value found in series done in temperate climates. The urinary excretions of iodine-127 and iodine-131 enabled the validity of the neck uptake measurements to be assessed.
