Abstract
The 17-ketosteroids present in an adrenal tumor and in the venous blood of a patient with a high level of urinary dehydroisoandrosterone were studied. Although free androstenedione and 11β-hydroxy-androstenedione were found in the tumor, no free dehydroisoandrosterone was found in the tumor or in adrenal venous plasma. Dehydroisoandrosterone sulfate was found both in the tumor and in adrenal venous plasma, where the concentration of this conjugate was greater than in peripheral venous plasma. This has been substantiated by the same findings in another case. On the other hand, the concentrations of androsterone sulfate and etiocholanolone sulfate were greater in peripheral venous plasma than in adrenal venous plasma. Thus it appears that dehydroisoandrosterone sulfate may have been produced by the tumor. In 4 other cases, a small quantity of free dehydroisoandrosterone was found in addition to dehydroisoandrosterone sulfate. In addition, the isolation of 7-ketodehydroisoandrosterone sulfate from the adrenal and from peripheral venous plasma is reported for the first time. New chromatographic techniques for the isolation of conjugated steroids are described.
