A patient who suffered three attacks of acute granulomatous thyroiditis eventually experienced permanent myxedema, as proved by failure of thyroidal uptake of I131 to increase after adequate stimulation with TSH. This phenomenon is distinctly unusual, in contrast to the more frequent occurrence of transient myxedema following severe attacks of acute thyroiditis.
