We appreciate the comments by Davis and Bell regarding our report from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, “Masturbation Frequency and Sexual Function Domains Are Associated With Serum Reproductive Hormone Levels Across the Menopausal Transition” (1). These authors' long-standing interest in endogenous androgens and female sexual function and dysfunction, and referenced cross-sectional study (2), makes their support of the importance of this large longitudinal study quite gratifying.
With respect to their concerns regarding our reporting of only total T and not calculated free T or free T index, we regret that space constraints did not allow us to show all of the analyses. As noted in the Analysis section, we also evaluated individual and combined models substituting free T index for T and SHBG and noted no difference from the models using T and SHBG. We presented T and SHBG in both individual (see Table 4) and combined (see Table 5) models because those analytes are the most clinically relevant.
