Why publish your research with Evolution Letters?

Evolution is the process that unifies biology. Evolution Letters, a fully open access journal, publishes cutting-edge research in all areas of evolutionary biology, spanning genes, genomes, and phenotypes. Evolution Letters publishes two types of articles, Letters and Comments and Opinions. Letters are research articles of outstanding clarity and originality that substantially advance the field or are of broad interest. We are particularly interested in the evolutionary processes that have led to the spectacular diversity of life on earth. Articles that introduce new analytical or methodological frameworks that are likely to be highly influential are encouraged, as are Comments and Opinion articles on new developments or emerging themes.

Discover why Evolution Letters is the perfect home for your next research article.

A journal for the community

Evolution letters is jointly owned by the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) and the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) and published by the not-for-profit organization Oxford University Press (OUP).

Authors publishing in the journal benefit from the global reach and backing of these two large and well-respected communities of evolutionary biologists, while the funds raised by publishing in the journal help support the vital activities of both societies, including conferences, symposia, grants and other initiatives.

Authors also benefit from:

  • No fuss, free format for initial submissions
  • Streamlined submission process
  • Free data deposition in Dryad
  • Advance article publication

Manuscript transfer

Evolution Letters is pleased to provide a manuscript transfer service to our society sister journals Evolution and the Journal of Evolutionary Biology. For articles transferred after review, reviews will be transferred as well.

Open access

Evolution Letters is fully open access, providing greater accessibility for researchers and readers across the globe, and compliance with funder, institutional, and national mandates that require publication in an open access journal. Learn more about the open access licenses available at OUP.

As a society-owned journal, Evolution Letters will strive to publish papers irrespective of ability of authors to pay. Waivers will be granted to scientists working in developing countries. For scientists working in other countries, we have a robust and inclusive waiver policy, and waivers will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you would like to apply for a partial or full waiver, please contact our in-house Managing Editor.

In addition, OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish agreements with institutions and consortia that provide funding for OA publishing. This means that corresponding authors from participating institutions can publish OA, and the institution will pay the APC charge. Find out if your institution is participating in a Read and Publish agreement.

SSE or ESEB members enjoy a 30% discount on the OA publication charge.
