Editorial Comment 2025-2

Haataja and others. "Social inequalities in the effects of school-based well-being interventions: a systematic review." ckaf005

The paper by Haataja and others may seem disappointing, in the sense that effects on social inequalities are seldom included in studies. However, their review does offer some important messages. There are examples suggesting that both large-scale whole-of-school interventions and small-scale adjustments to pedagogical practices can have the potential to reduce inequalities. They comment that teacher professional development has shown the potential to reduce the inequality gaps in learning. All agree that that the school is a central arena to give all equal chances in life. Initiatives listed in the review need not be costly, main hinders are usually unnecessary bureaucracy and political interference.
