Get to know the new Coeditors of Epidemiologic Reviews. Read below for more information about the diverse experiences they bring to the journal and their contributions to epidemiology.

Pablo Martinez Amezcua

Pablo Martinez Amezcua, MD, PhD, MHS, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, core faculty at the Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health, and Affiliated faculty at the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health. He earned his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, where he developed an early interest in public health and preventive medicine. He later pursued advanced training in epidemiology, completing a Master of Health Science degree and a doctorate in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Martinez Amezcua's research has significantly advanced our understanding of the interplay between sensory health and aging. His work has focused on the association of hearing loss with physical function and physical activity, shedding light on how sensory impairments contribute to broader health outcomes. His research interests span the role of mid-life cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and risk factors in shaping health trajectories at older ages, mainly focusing on physical function, cognitive health, and sensory loss. Dr. Martinez Amezcua is also interested in the role of social determinants of health, particularly among immigrants to the US, on physical and cognitive health at older ages.

In addition to his research, Dr. Martinez Amezcua is a dedicated and innovative educator, passionate about teaching epidemiology and mentoring students. He strives to make complex epidemiologic concepts accessible and relevant, fostering the next generation of researchers and public health professionals. His commitment to education is reflected in his development of courses that emphasize practical applications of epidemiologic methods. Dr. Martinez Amezcua's work continues to bridge the fields of aging, sensory health, and social epidemiology, contributing to strategies that promote healthier aging and reduce the burden of age-related conditions worldwide.

Ian J. Saldanha

Ian J. Saldanha, M.B.B.S., M.P.H., Ph.D., is an associate professor of epidemiology and of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Saldanha is core faculty at the Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis. He also is associate director of the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Center, which is one of nine such centers funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). He also holds an adjunct appointment as associate professor of health services, policy, and practice at the Brown University School of Public Health. He has expertise conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, developing and advancing methods to improve them, and teaching methods for their conduct. He has also researched the use of outcomes in clinical research. Dr. Saldanha has served on four National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committees, including as vice chair of one committee.

Dr. Saldanha has led multiple AHRQ-funded systematic reviews on a range of topics. He has also led multiple AHRQ contracts to develop, advance, maintain, and support the Systematic Review Data Repository Plus (SRDR+), a platform for conducting systematic reviews and sharing their data. Dr. Saldanha is an elected member of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology (SRSM) and currently serves as its treasurer. He has served as the associate editor for various journals (e.g., Systematic Reviews, Trials, Journal of Glaucoma) and for the AHRQ Effective Healthcare Program. Dr. Saldanha has taught multiple courses and workshops related to systematic reviews, meta-analysis, epidemiology, and clinical trials at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels at various universities and other venues, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He received his M.B.B.S. (M.D. equivalent) from Grant Medical College in Mumbai, India, and his M.P.H. and Ph.D. in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
