Since 1979, Epidemiologic Reviews has been a steady source of peer-reviewed systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and narrative reviews of the epidemiologic literature, summarizing and providing further depth to the field of epidemiologic research. In 2019, the Journal moved to an online-only model, which allows more publication flexibility. As we look to the future, we are making even more changes to keep Epidemiologic Reviews current and agile.

Epidemiology is a rapidly expanding and evolving discipline, with new research areas being identified all the time. This progress brings with it an increase in the number of articles written about those areas. To create more space for nuanced discourse on these topics, Epidemiologic Reviews changed in 2024 from issues comprising articles on a single topic to issues containing both themed and nonthemed articles. This is not unprecedented for the Journal; from its start in 1979 until 1992, Epidemiologic Reviews had no themes for its issues. Then, from 1993 to 2002, we published 2 volumes per year, 1 based on a theme and 1 with no defined topic. From 2003 to 2004, we alternated themed and nonthemed issues. It was only in 2005 that we began publishing a single issue each year based on a prespecified topic.
