ABSTRACT. In the horse, a syndrome of hirsutism, hyperglycemia, glucosuria, polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, and progressivedebilitation has been recognized. Most often the syndromehas been associated with adenomas of the pars intermedia of thepituitary and bilateral adrenal hyperplasia or nodular hyperplasiainvolving primarily the zona fasciculata. Previously, thesyndrome has been ascribed to compression of the hypothalamusby an expanding but functionally inactive pituitary neoplasm. Inthe present case, with RIA determination of plasma ACTHconcentrations, the syndrome was ascribed to pituitary ACTHdependenthyperadrenocorticism and likened to human Cushing'sdisease.
