Abstract
Gregory Palamas (1296–1357) is arguably among the most thoroughgoing theologians of deification in Christian history. This chapter provides an overview of the main contours of his thought on deification, together with its context in the Hesychast Controversy of the fourteenth century. It was chiefly through defending the life of the monastic hesychasts that Palamas laid out an expansive vision of the precise nature of human sanctification and deification. This initially involved clarifying the doctrine of the knowledge of God, the relationship between knowledge of the world and divine knowledge, and the participation of the body in deification. Through addressing such questions, Palamas’ famous teaching regarding deification by uncreated divine energy emerged. His position is summarized, together with that of several of his major defenders of the fourteenth century. Finally, the phenomenon of modern Palamism is touched on.
