9 Going Dutch: Stage Entertainment
Get accessJonas Menze studied media and music at the Hanover University of Music, Drama, and Media. Between 2008 and 2012 he joined a variety of musical theatre productions as production manager and production assistant. In 2017 he completed his doctoral degree in musicology at the University of Salzburg with a thesis on the framework conditions and production processes of German-language musicals, for which he had received a DOC fellowship from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). From 2016 to 2021 he worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Research on Musical Ability (IBFM) at Paderborn University. Since 2021 he has been employed by the Quality Assurance Department of the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences in Gelsenkirchen. Besides popular musical theatre, his research interests include empirical musicology, audience research and fan studies, the development of musical expertise, and lifelong learning in music as well as citizen science.

Abstract
This chapter explores the development, business strategy, and challenges of the Dutch live entertainment company and musical producer Stage Entertainment. The company was established in 1999 by the Dutch media and theatre impresario Joop van den Ende, co-founder of the media company Endemol. After expansion into the German musical theatre market, Stage Entertainment evolved into the market leader for musical theatre production in continental Europe and one of the major producers worldwide. The Amsterdam-based company became an important originator of local musicals and supporter of local musical theatre talent. Its portfolio of original productions includes musicals such as 3 Musketiers (2003), Ciske de Rat (2007), Sister Act (2009), and Rocky (2012). The chapter highlights how Stage Entertainment developed European markets and is now facing an uncertain future owing to audience decline and its acquisition by the American media conglomerate Advance Publications.
