He is the Ormond Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne who has served as National President of the Australian Society for Music Education and President of the International Society for Music Education. His research interests are broad and his approach interdisciplinary. His most important research examines the acquisition and development of musical competence, and motivation to engage and participate in music from novice to expert levels. With a particular interest in the acquisition of visual, aural, and creative performance skills, he has attempted to understand more precisely how music students become sufficiently motivated and self-regulated to achieve at the highest level.

Abstract

The Oxford Handbook of Music Education offers a comprehensive overview of the many facets of musical experience, behavior, and development in relation to this diverse variety of contexts. While the first volume primarily focuses on children during school-age years, this second volume collects an international list of contributors to explore how music learning takes place outside of the traditional classroom environment. Discussing a range of issues such as music education for the special needs population, music learning in adulthood, and music learning through media and technology these chapters help to broaden conceptions of music and musical involvement.
