Dear Mohammad Javād Fāzel Lankarānī (Lankarānī Jr),
I acknowledge receipt of your correspondence via email, dated 13 December 2011. I am grateful to you for accepting my offer to join me in this critical discourse on the subject of implementing the death penalty for blasphemy and apostasy. I hope that the outcome of this scholarly discourse will bring about greater clarity and refinement of the subject and move it closer to reality. Your objections and critiques of my letter, in which I objected to your late father’s issuance of the “terror fatwa” and your expression of joy and delight at its implementation, is useful and important because, regrettably, your view is commonly held in the seminaries and warrants scrutiny.2 In this treatise, while subjecting your central claim to critical analysis, I endeavour to bring to light the futility of the endless proofs and groundless justifications that you had advanced under the rubric of traditional Islam and current ijtihād, as well as your negligence in failing to take precautions to preserve the principle of the sanctity of life. I invoke the Qur’an, as well as the Sunna of the Prophet and the Imams, within the framework of the ijtihād adopted by the school of Ahl al-Bayt (i.e., the merciful Islam).
