ON THE COVER Masking fear. The book The Rose Society includes a passage that reads, "The irony of life is that those who wear masks often tell us more truths than those with open faces. —Masquerade, by Salvatore Laccona." A mask may partially cover a face, but the eyes still reflect a truth, an emotion, an anticipation, a fear. The eyes of the man with a mask on this month s cover, who is waiting to be tested for COVID-19, convey what he is feeling as he steps into the unknown. If he is negative, is he safe? If he is positive, is he going to get sick (or sicker)? Do physicians know enough about test results to understand disease probability or disease evolution? This issue of Clinical Chemistry contains three articles that help provide some answers to the last question. These articles include a new orthogonal testing algorithm, the association between neutralizing antibodies and serological assays, and profiling of plasma antigens and antibodies to understand disease progression.
