ON THE COVER Heart and blood vessels by da Vinci. Although widely known as a painter, Leonardo da Vinci was also a master of human anatomy. Around 1506, da Vinci dissected a 100-year-old man who had been observed to die suddenly but without any symptoms. Based on an observation of narrowing of the man s coronary arteries, Leonardo s knowledge of both anatomy and hydrodynamics led him to conclude that the cause of death was cardiac failure due to atherosclerosis. It took another 400 years before Nikolai Anichkov, in 1914, showed the significance of increased cholesterol (a biomarker still used today) in the development of atherosclerosis. We are still on a path towards a better understanding of biomarkers of cardiovascular disease, as highlighted by the editorials, interview, reflection, perspective, Q&A, opinions, case study, reviews, point/counterpoint, and research articles in this special issue of Clinical Chemistry.
