Abstract
Prince Milan Obrenović led Serbia to independence and became its first modern king. The first part of his rule witnessed the emergence of the Radical party, which would grow into an organized mass opposition of a kind his predecessors had not faced. Interlinked with this revolutionary threat at home were the revolutionary pressures in the wider Balkans confronting the Ottoman Empire, of which Serbia was still formally part, resulting in major uprisings in Hercegovina and Bosnia in 1875 and in the Bulgarian region in 1876. With danger for the regime went opportunity, for Serbian statesmen, primarily Liberals, sought to exploit these anti-Ottoman rebellions to achieve Serbia’s independence and expand its borders, while managing the revolutionary contagion at home. Radicals influenced by Svetozar Marković’s ideas viewed Milan’s regime of prince, bureaucracy and army as a continuation of Ottoman oppression, and the struggle against it as part of the wider struggle against the empire; they mobilized against both. Milan’s regime under Liberal management navigated between managing this threat and fulfilling Serbia’s national mission of liberation and unification. It did so with some success, resulting in an ultimately successful anti-Ottoman war and international recognition of Serbia’s independence within modestly expanded borders.
