Abstract
This chapter is geared to those who are new to the group modality. Students and practitioners unfamiliar with group work often do not understand its unique benefits and thus hold misconceptions about this modality. The authors synthesize information discussed in the previous three chapters and provide suggestions and recommendations that prepare novice group workers both personally and professionally to engage in group work. This chapter—in conjunction with the first three—will enhance readers’ willingness to facilitate groups and their confidence that they have the requisite skills and knowledge to do so. Considerations that are discussed include understanding the leader’s responsibilities for ensuring that the group culture supports its work, the importance of cultural competence and humility, the need to attend to the group as the client, and the relationship between a group structure and its purpose and member goals.
