Abstract
In this chapter the author introduces the core skills of group work practice. This discussion is organized around stages of the group’s development: preliminary, beginning/engagement, work, and ending. In the preliminary phase, practitioners focus on creating a group that maximizes the likelihood that mutual aid will occur. This includes tasks associated with composition, identifying group goals and purpose, and decisions about structure (number and length of sessions, etc.). Skills in the beginning phase encourage members to connect with one another and recognize their underlying commonalities, creating a group climate that promotes members’ work. Work phase skills help members accomplish their mutually agreed-upon goals and address impediments to this, which include in-group interpersonal dynamics. The final set of skills assists members in ending with one another and with the leader and helps them reflect on their work together, their growth, and future work.
