Abstract
This chapter juxtaposes two versions of a single film to explore how Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine responded to conflicting ideological pressures around representing the Aswan High Dam. Begun in 1960, the Soviet-financed Dam project was an icon of Egyptian economic development and Arab-Soviet “friendship.” Chahine’s lavishly co-produced film The People and the Nile was meant to document and celebrate this achievement, but it also raised uncomfortable questions about displaced Nubians, work opportunities for women, and more. In reconstructed film stills from the 1968 and 1970 versions, Jordan-based contemporary visual artist Ala Younis explores Chahine’s wholesale changes made in response to censorship and pressure from the Egyptian and Soviet funders.
