Abstract
In this chapter psychological assessment as a core functional competency for clinical psychologists is defined and discussed. The various functions of assessment in clinical psychology are also elaborated including description, diagnosis and prediction of behavior. Assessment is also discussed from the perspective of a skill that is unique to the role of the clinical psychologist compared to other mental health professionals. Specific types of assessment procedures are also presented such as biopsychosocial techniques, biological assessment, the clinical interview, structured clinical interviews, behavioral assessment, self-monitoring, cognitive assessment, personality assessment, family systems assessment, and commonly employed selected assessment interview measures, demonstrating the various approaches to assessment. The relationship between assessment, diagnosis and case formulation is also delineated. Finally, benchmark competencies for psychological assessment and the means for assessing competency in assessment are reviewed.
