Abstract
In this chapter the critical importance of the professional relationship as it relates to the roles and functions of the clinical psychologist is discussed. The importance of the relationship is traced through each role subsumed by the clinical psychologist including: clinician, teacher/mentor, leader, supervisor and researcher. The critical components of the effective relationship, working alliance as well as therapist characteristics, transference and countertransference are reviewed. In addition, interprofessional and intraprofessional collaborative relationships and strategies for fostering competencies in the relationship realm are discussed. Finally, benchmark competencies and methods for assessing relationship competencies are emphasized.
