General
The Society is unusual in that most of the papers it publishes are the result of direct invitations to particular individuals. However, the Society is also willing to consider Replies and Discussion Notes for publication in the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, which will undergo a process of refereeing.
Submission
As from 2016, the Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume will be using an online submission system for all invited and general submissions (Replies and Discussion Notes for the Proceedings only for the latter). Guidelines can be found on this page.
New authors should create an account prior to submitting a manuscript for consideration. Questions about submitting to the journal should be sent to the editorial office at [email protected].
Invited papers are not required to be anonymized for the purposes of the review process, however, unsolicited Discussion Notes for the Proceedings should be prepared for blind review and as such authors are reminded to keep their submissions anonymous and personal details and acknowledgements should be removed from the main document and provided instead in a separate title page document at submission stage.
Style
The Society’s house style requirements are set out in its Style Sheet. Please ensure that you refer to the house style requirements when preparing your manuscript.
Figure accessibility and alt text
Incorporating alt text (alternative text) when submitting your paper helps to foster inclusivity and accessibility. Good alt text ensures that individuals with visual impairments or those using screen readers can comprehend the content and context of your figures. The aim of alt text is to provide concise and informative descriptions of your figure so that all readers have access to the same level of information and understanding, and that all can engage with and benefit from the visual elements integral to scholarly content. Including alt text demonstrates a commitment to accessibility and enhances the overall impact and reach of your work.
Alt text is applicable to all images, figures, illustrations, and photographs.
Alt text is only accessible via e-reader and so it won’t appear as part of the typeset article.

Replies and Discussion Notes
- Discussion notes and replies will only be considered if they clearly respond to papers published in the Proceedings or Supplementary Volume.
- Discussion notes and replies to papers from the Proceedings or Supplementary Volume regularly take the form of a concise commentary or criticism.
- Accepted notes and replies are published in the Proceedings only.
- Interested authors are advised to read previous notes and replies published in the Proceedings. This will give prospective authors an idea of what the Society is willing to accept for publication.
- Discussion notes and replies are the only unsolicited papers the Society will review for publication. Any other kind of submission will not be considered.
- Papers must not exceed 2000 words.
- Papers must adhere to the Society's house style requirements, which are set out in its Style Guide.
- Papers must be formatted in either Word 2003 (and higher) or RTF. Papers containing many symbols, tables, etc. and which may therefore be liable to distortion should be formatted in PDF. Authors who are unsure about the possibility of distortion are free to submit in both Word/RTF and PDF.
- Papers must be prepared for blind review, i.e., no self-identiyfing references.
- Papers must be accompanied by a separate cover sheet which provides the paper's title, author's name, institutional affiliation (if applicable), and contact details (email address, phone number, and mailing address).
Authors are encouraged to observe high standards with respect to publication best practice. Any cases of ethical or publication malpractice are treated very seriously and will be managed with in accordance with the Commission on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines of which OUP is a member. Figures/Illustrations
For information on how to submit figure files, please see the Oxford Journals page on manuscript preparation: https://dbpia.nl.go.kr/journals/pages/authors/preparing_your_manuscript.
Proofs
Authors will receive a link to the PDF proof of their manuscript on our online system by email, and it is essential that a current email address is supplied with all manuscripts. Proofing instructions will accompany the PDF file but the proof should be checked immediately upon receipt and uploaded in accordance with covering instructions. Only essential corrections should be made at the proof stage.
Issue Publication
For the Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume, manuscripts arrive at OUP and go through the production process until the final versions are ready to publish. These are then published into an issue online once the issue is prepared.
Copyright
It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors assign copyright to the Aristotelian Society. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning copyright, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press, on behalf of the Aristotelian Society, is notified in writing and in advance.
Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright assignment form.

Permissions
Third-party permissions
In order to reproduce any third party material, including tables, figures, or images, in an article authors must obtain permission from the copyright holder and be compliant with any requirements the copyright holder may have pertaining to this reuse. When seeking to reproduce any kind of third party material authors should request the following:
- non-exclusive rights to reproduce the material in the specified article and journal;
- print and electronic rights, preferably for use in any form or medium;
- the right to use the material for the life of the work; and
- world-wide English-language rights.
It is particularly important to clear permission for use in both the print and online versions of the journal, and we are not able to accept permissions which carry a time limit because we retain journal articles as part of our online journal archive.

Funding
Crossref Funding Data Registry
In order to meet your funding requirements authors are required to name their funding sources, or state if there are none, during the submission process. For further information on this process or to find out more about CHORUS, visit the CHORUS initiative.
Open Access options
Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume authors have the option to publish their paper under the open access initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication.
After your manuscript is accepted, the corresponding author will be required to accept a mandatory licence to publish agreement. As part of the licensing process you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish to pay for open access. If you do not select the open access option, your paper will be published with standard subscription-based access and you will not be charged.
Licences and Charges
Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume offers the option of publishing under either a standard licence or an open access licence. Please note that some funders require open access publication as a condition of funding. If you are unsure whether you are required to publish open access, please do clarify any such requirements with your funder or institution.
Should you wish to publish your article open access, you should select your choice of open access licence in our online system after your article has been accepted for publication. You will need to pay an open access charge to publish under an open access licence.
Details of the open access licences and open access charges.
OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish agreements with institutions and consortia which provide funding for open access publishing. This means authors from participating institutions can publish open access, and the institution may pay the charge. Find out if your institution is participating.
Author Discounts
All corresponding authors will be provided with a free access link to their article upon publication. The link will be sent via email to the article’s corresponding author who is free to share the link with any co-authors. Please see OUP’s Author Self-Archiving policy (see above) for more information regarding how this link may be publicly shared depending on the type of license under which the article has published.
