Open-Access Publication Charges

Background

AoB PLANTS is an open-access journal, whereby individuals anywhere in the world can read, download and share our peer-reviewed articles free of charge. Such unrestricted online access ensures that authors can have their work read by a the largest possible audience.

Although AoBP is a non-profit journal, its operating costs—including peer review and website management, journal production, and indexing/citation services such as Web of Science—must be covered by a modest open-access publication fee of GBP £1,014* per published article.

Our fee is among the lowest levied by any open-access journal in the biological sciences and illustrates the commitment of AoB PLANTS to provide an economical means for rapidly publishing research to a global audience.

*There is no publication fee for manuscripts that were submitted to our sister journal, Annals of Botany, and which received a decision letter in which the Editor encouraged transfer to AoBP. If accepted following editorial and possible external peer review at AoBP, such papers will be published for free, with full open-access as for all other articles in AoBP.

Waiver Policies

Authors from developing countries can qualify for a complete or partial waiver of open-access fees. Corresponding authors from any of the Free Access Countries will be eligible for waivers of up to 100%. Authors from Reduced Rate Access Countries are eligible for waivers of up to 50%. Visit our developing countries page for a list of qualifying countries.

Acceptance of submitted manuscripts is based solely on the outcome of the peer-review process. Requests for financial assistance will not be disclosed to either referees or editors and will have no bearing on their recommendations.

Payment of the open-access charge will be required after the article has been accepted for online publication.

Read & Publish Agreements

OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish (R&P) agreements with institutions and consortia to provide funding for open access publishing. This means authors of eligible article types from participating institutions can publish open access, with the host institution covering the fees.

You can find out if your institution is participating here, or find more information on Read & Publish Agreements here. Eligible authors whose articles are accepted for publication will be guided through a series of simple steps to request use of open access funds.
