Call for Papers

AoB PLANTS is seeking submissions for upcoming Special Issues. Please see below for information on current calls for papers, and submit your work here.

AoBP Special Issue for Emerging Voices in Botany

In 2022, AoBP announced a new platform for early career researchers: the AoBP Special Issue on Emerging Voices in Botany, with an accompanying award. The first edition has been a tremendous success, giving voice to nearly 20 early career researchers.

We are excited to announce the long-awaited 2nd edition of the Special Issue on Emerging Voices in Botany.

Early career researchers are invited to submit a manuscript for publication in the Special Issue for Emerging Voices in Botany. Accepted manuscripts will be published for free, and - like every paper in AoBP - fully open access.

There will also be an an accompanying award as part of this special issue. One award will be given to a student, and one award will be given to a post-PhD researcher. Each winner will receive a cash prize of USD $2,500 and be profiled in the journal's social media feeds and in Botany One.

Manuscripts should provide a brief overview of current knowledge about an open question in plant sciences, and the author's perspective on the best ways forward to resolving the question. We welcome adapted literature reviews that highlight the author's areas of expertise. Submissions should be between 3000 and 5000 words (main text, excluding the Abstract, References, Acknowledgements, Figure legends, and Tables). The main text may be structured in whatever way the author thinks best. Any number of tables, figures, or other visuals is allowed. Supporting Information is also allowed, but must not be used to circumvent word limits.

Questions:

  • Who counts as an early career researcher for the purpose of this special issue?

To be eligible for inclusion in the Special Issue, the lead author must either be a current student (undergraduate or postgraduate) at the time of submission, or they must have completed their PhD no more than 5 years prior to the date of submission and not hold an ongoing (tenure-track) position at the time of submission. Individuals who previously authored or co-authored a submission that was accepted for publication in the Special Issue on Emerging Voices in Botany are not eligible for inclusion in the study.

  • Can I have co-authors?

We prefer submissions for Emerging Voices papers to be primarily the intellectual work of the lead author. You are welcome to include co-authors, but if you do so, you must include a statement outlining the contribution of each author, and certifying that the paper is primarily the intellectual work of the ECR who is lead author.

  • What if I miss the deadline?

If you are close to submitting an Emerging Voices manuscript but cannot meet the deadline of 31 March 2025, please contact Chief Editor Tom Buckley at buckley@aobplants.org to request an extension.

  • Can I just submit the literature review chapter from my dissertation?

We welcome literature reviews, provided they have been adapted to satisfy the criteria outlined above.

  • Can I submit a manuscript that has previously been rejected from another journal?

Yes, provided it has been adapted to satisfy the criteria outlined above.

  • I have another question that isn't listed here.

Please email Chief Editor Tom Buckley at buckley@aobplants.org with any additional questions.

  • How do I submit?

Go to the AoBP submission site at https://aobplants.msubmit.net/cgi-bin/main.plex and follow the instructions as if you were submitting a normal manuscript. When you are given a choice to nominate a Special Issue for your submission to be associated with, choose the Special Issue on Emerging Voices in Botany.
