The 13th International Symposium on Tardigrada was organized by the “Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia”, the “Società dei Naturalisti e Matematici di Modena”, and the “Museo di Storia Naturale” of Verona. The Symposium returned to Modena 30 years after the 4th International Symposium on Tardigrada in 1985, organized by Professor Roberto Bertolani. Specifically, the 13th Symposium took place at the complex of “Centro San Geminiano” of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (23–25 June) and at the “Museo di Storia Naturale” of Verona (26 June), historical buildings representing examples of how history and innovation can be fruitfully combined.

The 13th Symposium was attended by more than 100 participants coming from 22 countries all over the world. This large number reflects the expanding worldwide interest in tardigrades, which are increasingly used as a model organism in biology. In addition, the Symposium was an auspicious occasion to meet and exchange ideas and opinions as a part of our common experience, as well as a significant platform to strengthen collaborations among scientists, and to develop new relationships and plan exciting, innovative projects. A major success of the 13th Symposium was the attendance of the large number (40) of young researchers, who represent a guarantee for the future of research activities on tardigrades. Thanks to grants from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena (Modena, Italy), East Tennessee State University (USA), Martin Microscope Company (USA), and the Linnean Society of London (UK), the Symposium was able to provide a very low registration fee for young researchers.
