Abstract
This chapter explores the Roman public bathhouse through abundant references from an unlikely source—rabbinic literature. Here, it imagines a literary construction of a model bathing establishment in Roman times as it existed in the collective rabbinic imagination: a “literary” bathhouse. Many of these rabbinic references are terse and isolated, embedded in complex legal discussions, or as the background for stories and statements. But when stitched together, these pieces of evidence comprise one of the fullest descriptions of any Roman institution in the eastern Mediterranean, one replete with nuance and detail. This chapter thus lays out the spatial and structural foundation for the rest of the book. It also places the authors of this literary creation, the rabbis, at the core of Roman life, deeply embedded in one of its central institutions.
