this book includes references and quotations from hundreds of ancient sources in most of the spoken languages of the Roman Mediterranean. All passages are brought in English. The translations are mine unless indicated otherwise. When translating full passages I’ve tried to stay as close as possible to the original literary wording; I use brackets [] to signal the addition of words to make the flow of the translation smoother, and I use parentheses () to mark additional explanations that are not part of the text. The Bibliography provides a full list of Primary texts with the editions I used and available translations to English where these exist, so readers can consult, compare, and decide about the best rendition of the original. The list of Primary texts also provides the abbreviated title used in the notes. In general, for abbreviations I follow the conventions of the Oxford Classical Dictionary (4th edition) for the Greek and Latin texts, and the SBL Handbook of Style (1999 edition) for the Jewish texts. I also follow the latter in transliteration of the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic into English, and regarding the abbreviations of periodicals and series. For personal names I use the common spelling in English; for names of places in Judaea/Palestine I follow the list of the Tabula imperii romani: Iudaea Palaestina, ed. Yoram Tsafrir, Leah Di Segni, and Judith Green (Jerusalem: Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, 1994), and for all others, the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World, ed. Richard J. A. Talbert (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2000).
