The editorial board of the newly launched PNAS Nexus is proud to announce the first issue of this open access, interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal. This new sibling journal to PNAS holds a special place in history. It is the first fully open access journal that has an extensive editorial board representing the three academies (National Academy of Sciences, NAS; National Academy of Medicine, NAM; and the National Academy of Engineering, NAE). PNAS Nexus is highly multidisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary in scope and its goal is to publish original research findings and perspectives from across the spectrum of the biological, physical, and social sciences, as well as the fields of engineering and medicine.

Being open access is of particular significance to PNAS Nexus, and we are firmly committed to making our research articles and other contributions freely available to the research community at large. We hope that by eliminating the silos that are often encountered in journals that are dedicated to specific disciplines, PNAS Nexus will play a key role in disseminating research across different fields. PNAS Nexus welcomes submissions from authors around the world.

As Editor-in-Chief, along with my three Deputy Editors—Efi Foufoula-Georgiou (Physical Sciences and Engineering), Michele Gelfand (Social and Political Sciences), and David Brenner (Biological, Health, and Medical Sciences)—I would like you to know that we continue to actively seek contributions that broadly span the biological, medical, physical, engineering, and social sciences, and those that have broad readership potential. Due to the close relationship with PNAS, PNAS Nexus will encourage authors who are submitting to PNAS but whose manuscripts might not be a fit there to seamlessly transfer their manuscripts to PNAS Nexus. Unlike PNAS, PNAS Nexus will not have a special Academy member submission track nor provide special access for Academy members. The Associate Editors and the Board of Reviewing Editors (BoRE, https://dbpia.nl.go.kr/pnasnexus/pages/editorial-board) span the three Academies, and include both national and international experts in their respective fields. We welcome recommendations for the BoRE where there are gaps in research areas that are covered by PNAS Nexus.

In this inaugural issue, we are delighted to include editorials from the three Academy presidents: John Anderson (NAE), Victor Dzau (NAM), and Marcia McNutt (NAS), along with several key research articles that span emerging responses to the current pandemic, vaccine prioritization in marginalized populations, and wastewater surveillance in health security. As we continue to perform a rapid review of submissions, newly accepted articles will be published both online and in upcoming issues. Our publication model allows content to be placed online as soon as it is accepted enabling access to our readership in a timely manner.

On behalf of the entire Editorial Board and our editorial team, we invite you to join this journey with us and encourage you to submit your manuscripts to PNAS Nexus.
