Abstract

In his groundbreaking book, Jack Halberstam argued that female masculinities can challenge hegemonic models of gender conformity. In this book, we ask what happens when male bodies—or bodies that are perceived as male—“do” femininity? And what exactly does it mean to “do” femininity? Or even to “be” feminine? In this edited volume, we bring together a collection of first-person narratives, essays, and empirical studies that answers these questions and addresses the configurations and complexities of male femininities. Each of the readings in this book explores the conditions under which men engage less with masculinity and more with femininity and the consequences of these practices. Through innovative and accessible writings, our edited volume turns the spotlight on the borderlands of gender performativity, undermining the fixity of sex and gender. Male Femininities captures what it means to transgress gender norms and binaries at this historical moment when gender binaries are actively being challenged and confronted.
