10 Unexpected Breasts, Unexpected Pleasures: Exploring Cisgender Men’s Breast Development and Bra Wearing

Abstract
This chapter draws on analysis of fourteen qualitative interviews with men—including eleven cisgender men and three male-identified intersex people—to explore experiences of male breast development. For a subset of these men, embracing this generally unexpected development led to the emergence of shifts in gender expression and unanticipated experiences of pleasure. While much of the research on gender identity and expression focuses on intentional bodily changes made to integrate outward appearance and sense of self, this research suggests that involuntary bodily changes are another important site for theorizing entanglements between gender, bodies, pleasure, and desire.
