Abstract
Chapter 1 tells the story of Mary Calderone’s childhood as the daughter of photographer Edward Steichen, her childhood sexual traumas, her difficult path to medical school and public health, and the way she reframed the story of her childhood experiences to motivate and explain her lifelong campaign to destigmatize childhood sexuality. Beginning with her childhood, the chapter concludes with her early career in public health, her marriage to Dr. Frank Calderone, and her part-time career in the late 1940s as a school physician giving public health lectures on healthy parent-child communication about sexuality.
