Abstract
This chapter brings much-needed scholarly attention to Alexis Pauline Gumbs, whose social justice activism is embodied in her unique spiritual perspectives and practices. Eschewing tenure-track academia to develop her own Black feminism public curriculum, Gumbs practices ancestor reverence inspired by Yoruba/Ifá traditions. From her early Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind community events and organizing against sexual violence, Gumbs has become a prominent Black feminist intellectual and leader. Her interviews and her experimental, poetry-laden academic essays, as well as her articulations of her experiential, spiritual online intensives were largely inspired by the lives and writings of Black feminists such as Audre Lorde and Alice Walker. The chapter also considers Gumbs’s Black Feminist Breathing Chorus, in which participants chant the words of Black women ancestors—for example, Harriet Tubman’s “My people are free”—to reimagine liberatory possibilities.
