This project has finally come to fruition after several years, thanks in large part to the dedication of this book’s contributors. Despite the twin collective traumas of a global pandemic and the persistent violence experienced by nonwhite and nonbinary persons—and the toll these took on our mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being—they persevered. Always quick to respond to my emails and patient when the project hit a snag and slowed our progress, they demonstrated their commitment to this volume and the women celebrated therein. Without them, this book would not have been possible.
It goes without saying—but I’ll say it anyway—that the book you’re reading has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the staff at the University Press of Mississippi. First, because she saw my vision and guided me deftly through the initial stages of preparing and editing the manuscript, I thank acquisitions editor Emily Bandy. Second, I appreciate the help of those who worked “behind the scenes,” so to speak: Valerie Jones and Corley Longmire; Jennifer Mixon, Todd Lape, and Joey Brown; freelancer Lynn Whittaker, whose expert copyediting added polish; and the many others at the Press whom I’ve not named but have been instrumental in the book’s completion and distribution.
