Abstract
Chapter 4 examines the emergence of a number of nationalist youth movements in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century. We look at how these organisations set out to engender a sense of national identity through the promotion of the Irish language, history and mythology, and other traditions which were held to be distinctly Irish. At the same time, we argue, some of these organisations had much in common with imperialist uniformed groups, such as Baden-Powell's Scouts.
