About

Liverpool University Press (LUP) is the UK’s third oldest university press, with a distinguished history of publishing exceptional research since 1899, including the work of Nobel prize winners. LUP has rapidly expanded in recent years and now publishes approximately 70 books and 21 journals a year, specialising in the modern languages, history, literature and visual culture. LUP is the only university press to have been shortlisted for the award of Academic and Professional Publisher of the Year by the Independent Publishers Guild, a distinction awarded in both 2012 and 2013.  The award judges lauded the Press’s ‘rigorous academic schedules’ and deemed Liverpool University Press ‘a beacon of independent academic publishing’.

The Press’s success has been built on carefully selected scholarly niches, in which LUP publishes the highest quality research.  Key subject areas and authors include:

  • Graham Huggan, Chris Bongie, Rosemary Jolly and Peter Hulme in Postcolonial Studies
  • Charles Forsdick, Larry Schehr, Doris Kadish and Mireille Rosello in French Studies
  • Donald Akenson, Sean Connolly and Marianne Elliott in Irish Studies
  • T. P. Wiseman, John Henderson and Gillian Clark in Ancient History and Classics
  • Paul Julian Smith, Joan Ramon Resina and Jonathan Mayhew in Hispanic Studies
  • Tim Youngs, Faye Hammill and Peter Robinson in Literary Studies
  • LUP is a leading publisher in Science Fiction Studies, including Mike Ashley’s masterful series of books on the history of the SF magazine
  • Liverpool University Press is also the leading publisher of scholarly material relating to its own city, a place pivotal in the history of migration, the slave trade, maritime history and popular culture.
