Abstract
The introduction explains the historical background in detail, elucidating the political and military situation, in order to understand the background to the speech. It goes on to cover Demosthenes’ life and career, his family background, his incresingly hawkish speeches about Philip of Macedon and Philip's exploits, and the aftermath of the battle of Chaeronea. Also included are analysis of Demosthenes’ deliberative oratory, the structure and style of the speech, and relationship to the speeches that followed, including the famous Third Philippic.
