Abstract
This chapter recounts the emergence of the anarchist movement in the context of the late 1870s-1880s ‘Socialist Revival’ in France and Britain. The second half of the 1880s was dominated by the spread of propaganda by the deed, as the emphasis was increasingly placed on acts of violence as a way of publicising anarchism. These slogans were put into practice from the mid-1880s onwards, resulting in a spate of anarchist-inspired attacks, leading in turn to anti-anarchist psychosis and fierce police repression, causing many companions to leave for Britain, a uniquely liberal asylum.
