Some of these chapters, or parts of them, first appeared, usually in substantially different form, in the Cambridge Quarterly, the Edinburgh Review, a special issue of the Irish University Review edited by Peter Denman, PN Review, the Times Literary Supplement and the Yeats Annual, and in collections edited by Fran Brearton, Santanu Das, Terry Gifford, Alan Gillis, Edna Longley and Bernard O’Donoghue. Several originated as lectures and seminars given at the universities of Bristol, Cardiff, Lausanne, Liverpool, Northumbria, Princeton, Queen’s, Belfast and York, and at the London Modernism Seminar of the Institute of English Studies of the University of London, the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon and the Yeats International Summer School in Sligo. I am very grateful for these invitations and for the illuminating comments made in discussion by their participants. I am also grateful to the many undergraduate and postgraduate students who, in Sheffield, Swansea, St Andrews, Liverpool and Sligo, discussed with me over many years some of the issues aired in this book and kept me on my toes.
